Though loosely called sand shoes, this kind of shoe came in several models. Skellerup were the only NZ manufacturer of hand built vulcanized sand shoes at the time. They pre-dated running shoes as we know them today and tended to have white canvas which was kept clean by application of whitener. Perhaps the most notable thing about these shoes was the lack of modern cushioning. No doubt some would like to think they were hard shoes for a hardier breed of runners. Runners could typically be seen seen in white shorts and white singlet as well.
