Television broadcaster Brian Edwards, on the programme Gallery, interviewed opposing parties in a Post Office dispute, and effected a settlement. 2

The body of Welsh-born Tasmanian hitchhiker Jennifer Mary Beard was found near the Haast River Bridge. No one has ever been charged. 3

Four men died when a section of the Kaimai rail tunnel collapsed during contruction. Eleven men were trapped in the cave-in and two rescue shafts were bored. 3

Bruce McLaren was killed while driving a racing car at Goodwood, England. McLaren had been runner-up in the 1961 world championship and came third in 1962. 3

A baby was discovered in a blood-stained Pukekawa farmhouse but her parents were missing. Jeanette and Harvey Crewe's bodies were found and Arthur Allan Thomas was convicted of their murder. 3

The last DC-3 passenger flight was made, after 23 years service with NAC. The DC-3s were replaced by Fokker Friendships. 2

Labour member for Southern Maori Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan had a daughter and became the first MP to give birth while in office. 3

An intense storm lasting 12 hours lashed the Hutt Valley and Wellington. One life was lost and flood damage to the value of $30 million was caused. 2
