It happened then

Some key events in New Zealand since 1960.

Buildings at the Agrodome in Ngongotaha were completed, and sheep and wool displays began for tourists. 2

The Department of Social Welfare was established. 2

The Values Party was formed by Tony Brunt and Norman Smith. The left-of-centre party espoused environmental causes and predicted social and environmental disaster unless there was zero growth in the population and the economy. 3

Seat belts became compulsory for use in the front seats of most vehicles registered after January 1965. 3

The Equal Pay Act was passed after a long campaign and a Commission of Inquiry. The public service had introduced equal pay in 1960 and the new Act extended the principle to the private sector. 3

The Accident Compensation Act introduced a scheme to be administered by a commission under which rehabilitation and compensation would be provided to people suffering injury through accident. 3

The Silver Fern daily service began between Auckland and Wellington using new Japanese-built air-conditioned railcars. 3

The last New Zealand forces were withdrawn from Vietnam. Since 1965 almost 4,000 New Zealand volunteers has served in Vietnam with 35 being killed and 187 wounded. 3
