Flavour of New Zealand

NZ popular culture 1960 onward

It happened then

Some key events in New Zealand since 1960.

The Queen opened the $18.8 million executive wing of Parliament which, because of its shape, has always been known as 'The Beehive'. 3

David Lange won the Mangere seat in the by-election caused by the resignation of Colin Moyle. 3

Carmen (real name Trevor Rupe), a stripper, drag queen and coffee bar owner, polled 1440 in the Wellington mayoral election. Her platform included: bars open until 2am, nudity on some beaches, legal prostitution, and sex education for 14-year-olds. 3

For the first time an active party politician, Keith Holyoake, was appointed Governor General. There was prolonged public controversy about the appointment but Holyoake accepted. Because of his health, he insisted on a three year term instead of five, and during this time he acted with strict impartiality. 3
