The Royal Forest and Bird Society successfully objected to the South Island Beech Forest Utilisation Scheme, which would have seen clear felling or selective logging of nearly 340,000 ha. 2


28-Jan-1971
Maori language courses were introduced in three Auckland intermediate schools. Three years later over 10,000 students were taking Maori in secondary schools. 3


19-Jun-1971
The first all-container ship to visit New Zealand, the Columbus New Zealand, berthed at Wellington's new container terminal. 3


05-Sep-1971
The Silver Star Express began its service between Wellington and Auckland. An all-sleeper train, it had a dining car and cabin service. 2


01-Oct-1971
Vickers Viscounts were withdrawn, by NAC, from all main trunk routes. 2

Radio licences were abolished. Television licence fees remained, and were $20. 2


30-Nov-1971
New Zealand's only aluminum smelter at Tiwai Point, Bluff, was officially opened. The Manapouri power project had been built for the smelter which uses 16,000kWh of electricity to make one tonne of aluminium. 3
